Teams Client Software Upgrade

February 26, 2024

Microsoft is transitioning to a new Microsoft Teams client software version. New Teams is an upgraded and optimized version of the classic version of Teams. The new Teams desktop client is reimagined from the ground up with performance in mind, providing a faster, simpler, and more flexible experience. It installs and loads faster, letting you launch the app and join meetings more quickly, giving you more time to focus on work.

You will continue to be able to chat with individuals, participate in group conversations, and join meetings in Teams as you have before. OIT will be making the following changes to help transition to the new Teams client:

  • This Thursday evening, February 29, you will see a banner in Teams telling you that Classic Teams (the old version) will soon be unavailable, and you will be offered the option to switch to the new Teams version. We encourage you to try the new version out now while both versions are still available.
  • Then, on Thursday, March 14, the Teams client will change to the new Teams client by default. However, you will still be able to switch back to the Classic Teams client if you have any problems. In case you encounter any problems, please contact your IT unit to help troubleshoot this.
  • On Monday, April 1, the older Classic Teams client will be decommissioned and you will only be able to use the new Teams client.

Tips for Migrating to the new Teams

After migrating to the new version of Teams, you should check your Settings as they may have reverted to default. If you are on macOS, you should also check to make sure your Microphone is working.
