Microsoft Windows 11 Migration

The OIT Desktop Support group will start deploying Microsoft Windows 11 on OIT-managed machines before Windows 10 support ends in October 2025. Devices overseen by OIT should either be updated to Windows 11 or replaced with a new device that comes with Windows 11 pre-installed.

What is Microsoft Windows 11?

Windows 11 is Microsoft’s newest major release of its Windows operating system and the successor to Windows 10. Windows 11 is built on the same foundation as Windows 10. If you use Windows 10, then Windows 11 is a natural transition.

Windows 11 features a redesigned user interface that follows Microsoft’s new Fluent Design guidelines. The redesign, which focuses on ease of use and flexibility, comes alongside new productivity and social features and updates to security and accessibility, addressing some of the deficiencies of Windows 10.

How does this change my day-to-day experience?

The changes in Windows 11 are mostly aesthetic. The update brings a fresh new design, visual changes throughout the interface, and a center-aligned taskbar.

Goals

  • Pilot Windows 11 and collect user feedback
  • Upgrade departments en masse to Windows 11
  • Set Windows 11 as the default OS on all newly ordered devices

Deliverables

  • Windows 10 will reach the end of support on October 14, 2025. The current version, 22H2, will be the final version of Windows 10. Users must be upgraded to Windows 11 or procure a new Windows 11 device prior to this deadline.

We are currently in a pilot phase. OIT Desktop Supported customers can volunteer to be upgraded to Windows 11 by reaching out to the OIT Desktop Support team.

How do I left align the taskbar and Windows Start Menu?

We are still working on some customizations, the most notable being the placement of the Windows Start Menu and taskbar. To left-align these items as they were in previous versions of Windows, please do the following:

  • Right-click a blank area on the taskbar, then click Taskbar settings.
  • The Settings app will open to Personalization.
  • Expand the Taskbar behaviors dropdown to see more settings.
  • From here, you can set the Taskbar alignment to the Left.

Can the taskbar be moved to the left/right/top instead of the bottom?

Currently this is not possible in Windows 11 22H2. There is a possibility that this feature could be added with future updates, but according to Microsoft this cannot currently be changed.

Can I ungroup taskbar applications?

An option called Combine Taskbar buttons and hide labels is being rolled out systematically by Microsoft with Windows 11 updates. This feature will populate under Taskbar behaviors once available. As of August 2023, we do not have a timeline for this rollout.

How do I display seconds on the Windows 11 taskbar clock?

  • Right-click a blank area on the taskbar, then click Taskbar settings.
  • The Settings app will open to Personalization. Expand the Taskbar behaviors dropdown to see more settings.
  • Near the bottom of the menu, tick “Show seconds in the taskbar clock

How do I disable the Teams “share this window” button on the taskbar?

This is a new feature in Windows 11.

  1. Go to Settings>Personalization>Taskbar.
  2. Under Taskbar behavior, uncheck “Share any Window from my Taskbar“.

I’m seeing a Logitech Download Assistant error “LogitLDA.dll” when signing-in.

Upon logging in, some users may see the following error: “There was a problem starting C:\\Windows\System32\LogiLDA.dll. The specified module could not be found.”

This is attributed to an antiquated application for Logitech accessories and can be safely ignored. Devices should continue to work as expected. If you would like to have this disabled permanently, please let DSS know and they can disable it in “Startup Apps” within the Task Manager.

Outlook links are opening in Microsoft Edge instead of Firefox/Chrome

Microsoft Outlook can now be set individually to open links in email messages with your preferred web browser.

  1. Browse to File -> Options -> Advanced -> Link Handling.
  2. Set “Open hyperlinks…” to the Default Browser.

The File Explorer Ribbon is Missing in Windows 11

Starting with Windows 11 22H2, the classic ribbon interface in Windows Explorer has been removed. There is a way to show these options temporarily, but the change is not permanent. Please reach out to OIT as needed for details.
