Google Workspace for Education (formerly known as G Suite) is a cloud-based productivity suite that includes a range of tools such as email, calendar, document editing, file storage, and video conferencing, designed to help individuals and teams collaborate and get work done more efficiently.
UCI Google Workspace Includes
- UCI Gmail – Send and receive email messages with powerful search options, spam filtering, and chat
- UCI Google Apps – Publish and collaborate in real-time on Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Forms
- UCI Google Drive – Get access to files anywhere through secure cloud storage and file backup for your photos, videos, files, etc. Shared Google Drives can be requested by faculty and staff. See the Requests tab for more information.
- UCI Google Sites – Quickly create and publish collaborative websites
- UCI Google Groups – Available for faculty and staff by request.
- UCI Google Gemini AI – Large language model by Google AI

Important Notice About Storing Data
- UCI Google Drive may only be used for Protection Level 1 and 2 data. For more information, please view the UC Electronic Information Security policy.
- Protection Level 3 and 4 data should be stored on Microsoft OneDrive.

Faculty and staff can request Google Shared Drives and additional Google Drive storage. Use the request forms below.
UCI Google Storage Tier Limits
A storage limit is the maximum amount of storage a single account or shared drive can store.
Tier | Storage Limit | Available To |
---|---|---|
Default Tier for Licensed Users | 20 GB | Registered students, faculty, staff, guests, and groups |
Default Tier for Unlicensed Users | 5 GB | Alumni, retirees, and emeriti |
Default Tier for Shared Drives | 5 GB | Anyone, with a limit of one shared drive per account |
Additional Storage Pricing
OIT has developed a cost recovery process for faculty, staff, research teams, and administrative units to purchase their way into a higher tier for accounts, shared drives, or both. Undergraduate, graduate students, alumni, retirees, and guests are not eligible for additional storage.
