Enhancing Web Compliance: A New Approach to UCI Sites Creation

We are implementing a new procedure for the creation of UCI Sites websites. Moving forward, individuals will need to request a new website rather than being able to create them independently.

WordPress is one of the most popular content management systems, powering over 43% of all websites on the internet in 2024. It is highly user-friendly, offering an intuitive interface that allows people with minimal technical expertise to create and manage fully functional websites. However, it does require expertise to maintain it in a secure and stable manner. UCI Sites allows you to use the best parts of WordPress without worrying about the hard parts.

UCI Sites has some wonderful benefits but can also be too limiting for some needs. Before you begin, check to see if this is the right service for you.

Benefits

  1. Free: No charge to use the web hosting service. OIT pays for this service.
  2. Web-based editing: No special software needed, just a modern web browser.
  3. Unlimited pages and blog posts.
  4. Built-in version control.
  5. Security and Stability: Backups, updates, and security are handled for you. You don’t have to worry about patching, plugin conflicts, or troubleshooting issues.
  6. Generous media storage.
  7. More than 60 plugins to extend your website’s capabilities.
  8. Log in with your UCInetID and password.
  9. 24/7 Technical Support: Technical support is available from our partners at CampusPress.
  10. Site Privacy: In addition to public websites, you can restrict your site to people with UCInetIDs, only people you add, or password protect your site.
  11. Custom Domains: Faculty and staff may request a custom UCI domain.

Limitations

  1. Limited to installed WordPress plugins and themes. You cannot install or modify themes or plugins.
  2. Limited to editing via WordPress tools. No scripting or programming.
  3. All website contributors need an active UCInetID. You will no longer be able to log in after you graduate or are no longer employed by UCI.
  4. No SFTP Access
  5. 50 MB Upload Limit: You can only upload files that are 50MB or smaller.
  6. Only Faculty, Staff, and Graduate Students can create a site. Undergraduates can be added as members, however. (We recommend Google Sites for undergraduate use.)
  7. Inactive sites may be archived after 2 years if they have not been updated. We send multiple emails to administrators before archiving sites.
